Day 09 Namtso

Namstso is Tibet's largest saltwater lake and one of the highest at 4,700m. From Lhasa one travel along paved roads to a town called Damxung. Namtso is 40km from Damxung, through a valley and over Largeh La (5,180m)

The lake is about 70km long and 30km wide and has an area of 1,870 square km. Most visitors of the lake just head for Tashi Dor, a peninsula protruding into Namtso Lake from its south-eastern corner. Tashi Dor has sacred rock towers, cave-temples and hermitages. There are also vendors of cheap jewellery, shoddy wares and animals for you to pose for a photo (for a fee, of course). In good weather, one can see that Mount Nyanchen Tanglha (7,088m) in the distance south.
